You’re Doing Better Than You Think – Teaching Tip

“That was bad”…

Ever had a student play a piece for you and they thought it was horrible? It’s happened to me! And sometimes when I play a piece, it’s easy for me to say “that didn’t go so well” or “I messed up”. Guess what? Most of the time, whoever is listening doesn’t care (or notice) if you mess up.

So why do we want to point out our mistakes? Well, there could be many reasons. Insecurities, self-doubt, etc. What I like to teach students (and constantly remind myself of) is that…“You’re doing better than you think.”

The person that will be the hardest on you is yourself. We notice the slightest of imperfections that others might not.

One way to help students feel good about their progress is to include fun musical activities. I recently created one called “Fishing for Notes” and they love this. They get to take their mind of the challenges and test their knowledge without needing to focus so hard. Download it HERE.

Always strive to be better, but don’t get stuck on being perfect. You’re doing better than you think. ❤️
