As some you you may have seen on my Facebook or Instagram pages, the studio family just had a keyboard addition! I am so excited to share it with students this new year.
Something that I always try to do with piano students, is to get them to play with others. Playing piano can get lonely sometimes and that is why I love getting students to play together (hopefully we can this year). Not only do they get to meet new piano friends but they also learn to develop an essential skill as a pianist: the ability to accompany or play with others.
The ability to play with others requires the performer to be able to play their instrument while at the same time listening to what the other performer is playing. This is also a great time to work on timing and rhythm. These two are so important here because without it, there would be no way a duo or ensemble would be able to make music together.
This keyboard will also be useful for ear training and improvising. For example: I will sit at the keyboard and ask them to play something I just played at their piano. Or, we pick a key and create our own music and melodies.
Every student learns to play duets with me where they are already developing the skill to play fluently, independently, and confidently. My hopes with this new keyboard is to continue growing their skills to become even more confident in their performance and improv skills and their ability to accompany others.
